Elston Howard had 4 hits and 5 RBI and Warren Spahn allowed Charlie Goldie to

rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Des Moines Dusters destroyed

the Carolina Grays by a score of 19 to 1 at Candlestick Park.

Howard had a big evening at the plate.  He popped a two-run clout over the

fence (his 20th of the season) in the 5th inning, doubled plating two runs in

the 7th inning, smacked a single plating a run in the 8th inning and

delivered a base-hit in the 9th inning.  Des Moines kept the scorekeepers

busy in the 8th inning with 7 runs on 7 hits and the 9th inning when they had

6 runs on 4 hits.  Des Moines totaled 21 on the night.

The win went to Spahn(13-8) who allowed 1 run in the game. The loss was

charged to Jim Perry(7-12).  'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and

swung,' Howard said.  'That's it'

Harmon Killebrew lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI at Tiger

Stadium as the Kansas City Athletics won in dramatic fashion coming back to

beat the Oneonta Tigers by the count of 9 to 5.

Kansas City had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 6

runners on 4 hits.  The highlight belonged to Killebrew who deflated the mood

of the partisan fans when he belted a three-run homer (his 45th of the

season).  Kansas City had 9 hits for the afternoon.

Gerry Staley(2-1) allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning, and picked up the

victory. The loss was charged to Turk Lown(7-7) in relief.  Eric Melton was

understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.  He quickly

showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse, yet polite

response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.  Our guys gave

it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us this afternoon'

WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Mike Roarke blocked the plate, saving a run!

The North Bend Tadjers nipped the Pittsburgh Crawfords 7 to 6 at Busch Stadium

in a hard fought contest.

Jim Maloney(3-6) struggled at times, but was good enough to get the victory.

He gave up 10 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings and gave up 3 homeruns.

Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Jim Coates earned the save, his 3rd.  Gary Bell(9-10) was the loser.  He was

knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Earl Johnson was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we

just made one too many mistakes.  Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more

white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

History was made in Atlantic City as Don Schwall(5-1) tossed a no-hitter and

the Atlantic City Diamond Aces defeated the Des Moines Dusters by the score

of 4 to 0.

Schwall was just too much for Des Moines.  He gave his hometown fans a game

they'll never forget! He walked 5 Des Moines batters.  What an evening for

the fans.  They were on the edge of their seats from the 7th inning on.  With

every out, the electricity in the air mounted.  Atlantic City managed 8 in

their victory.

Warren Spahn(5-4) absorbed the loss.  After the game, Schwall was heard to

say, 'This is something I have dreamt about since I was a little boy - to

have it come true is just amazing!'

Ron Fairly had 5 hits and 3 RBI and Turk Lown shut Potomac down as the Oneonta

Tigers defeated the league door-mat Potomac Fighting Dems 16 to 15 at

Griffith Stadium.

Oneonta scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  After an out was recorded,

Rocky Colavito laced a base-knock, and an error was also committed.  Fairly

next to the plate and he laced a single scoring the run.  Oneonta lit up the

scoreboard in the 5th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits and the

8th inning with 6 runs on 4 hits.  A wild and woolly affair, this game saw

the lead change 5 times.

The win went to Jim Kaat(2-3) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Kaat was helped

out by Lown who recorded his 10th save.  Ed Rakow(0-7) was tagged with the

loss in relief.

With the hometown crowd on the edge of their seats, Hill Valley Lightning

Bolts came from behind to top ice-cold Des Moines Dusters, 7 to 4.

Hill Valley won the game with a rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 5

runs on 3 hits.  The big moment was provided by Vada Pinson who made the

crowd come alive when he emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 3rd

of the season).  Hill Valley had 8 hits for the afternoon.

Hoyt Wilhelm(1-0) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Tom

Morgan(0-1) took the loss in relief.  'We just wouldn't give up,' Pinson

said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole

way.'

The Atlantic City Diamond Aces edged the Mount Pleasant Mad Dogs in 14 innings

at Connie Mack Stadium by the score of 2 to 1.

Neither team scored in the first nine innings.  Atlantic City won the hard

fought contest in the 14th inning.  Billy Bruton led off and he drew a walk.

After an out was recorded, Gordy Coleman stepped in and he laced a base-hit.

Bubba Phillips then smacked a single bringing in a run.  Phillips took off

for second and slid in with a stolen base.  Marty Keough came to the plate

and was walked intentionally to load the bases.  One out later, Gene Green

stepped up to the plate and he singled resulting in an exciting win for

Atlantic City and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.

Atlantic City managed 11 in their victory.
