Kansas City Captures its First Title
Harmon Killebrew 1962 AARBL World Series MVP
1962 AARBL World Series MVP
Harmon Killebrew
After  seasons atop the AARBL, the Hill Valley Lightning Bolts were finally dethroned as AARBL Champions.  For the first time in their history, the Kansas City A's advanced to, and won the AARBL World Series.  On the way to the title, KC defeated the Wilmington Hornets in 6 games in its Division Series, and then bested the league's perennial bridesmaid, the Peoria Chiefs in 7 games in the World Series.  In the regular season, the A's won 101, and took the Western Division by 6 games over their arch rivals, the Mount Pleasant Mad Dogs.  Peoria won 103 games and won the East by 3 games over the Wilmington Hornets.  In the other Division Series, the Chiefs topped Mount Pleasant in a thrilling 7 game battle.

In the World Series, the teams split the first two games at Peoria, but when the teams traveled to Kansas City, the Chiefs gained the upper hand by taking games 3 and 5. But, the A's would not be denied, and took games 6 and 7 on the road to take their first ever AARBL World Series.  There were many stars in the series, but in the end, Harmon Killebrew's 4 home runs and 11 RBIs were the difference, as the "Killer" walked away with MVP honors.

During the regular season, Peoria outfielder Willie Mays was the league's dominant player as he walked off with his second AARBL MVP Award as well as his second Babe Ruth Award.  Playing for the 103 win Chiefs, Mays compiled a .294 batting average, totaled 51 home runs, good for second best in the league, and compiled a league best 159 RBI and 136 runs scored. Also putting up great offense numbers was A's outfielder Hank Aaron (.310, 37 HRs, 120 RBIs) and Bill White of the Mount Pleasant Mad Dogs (.327, 28 HRs, 111 RBIs).  Also making an impact offensively was Peoria rookie Tom Tresh.  The slugging shortstop hit .290 with 17 home runs and 76 RBIs while winning the AARBL's Rookie of the Year Award.  On the pitching side, Bob Purkey of the Wilmington Hornets was the first ever repeat winner of the league's Cy Young Award with a league leading 26 wins and a 2.54 E.R.A.  Purkey also paced the league with an .813 winning percentage and 297.1 innings pitched.  Hill Valley reliever Hoyt Wilhelm was a repeat winner the Rolaids Reliever Award, his third over all.

staged a dramatic comeback over the Peoria Chiefs by a score of 7 to 5 at

Yankee Stadium.

Kansas City came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs

when he delivered a single.  Mickey Mantle was next and he laced a one-base

hit, and an error was also committed.  Killebrew then smacked a three-run

homer (his 2nd of the season).  Kansas City totaled 12 on the night.

The victory went to Marshall Bridges(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing

1 run. Jim Umbricht was credited with his 1st save.  Roy Face(0-1) was the

loser in relief.

Killebrew said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate

tonight.  You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can.  A couple

pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'

Tony Taylor smacked 2 homeruns and Bill Monbouquette struck out 10 batters at

Municipal Stadium where the Peoria Chiefs beat the Kansas City Athletics by

the score of 4 to 2.

Monbouquette(1-0) was in control of the game from the outset.  He didn't allow

much, just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Peoria took care of Kansas City

with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Jack Kralick(0-2) was the losing pitcher.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in

his 7 innings of work.  Monbouquette was asked about his big strikeout

performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the

road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets

real still and quiet.  Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the

crowd out of the game.'
